Farce All The Way Down

Shorter Helicopter Harold Ford: It's outrageous that my opponent is trying to actually get the support of other party officials. I have never seen such underhanded tactics!

You probably, think I'm kidding about that, but I'm not. The response seems obvious:

Jefrey Pollock, a campaign adviser to Ms. Gillibrand, said the senator had worked hard to earn the backing of 56 county leaders, and suggested that Mr. Ford, a vice chairman at Merrill Lynch, had himself to blame for a lack of party officials’ support.

“Harold Ford wants to have it both ways,” Mr. Pollock said. “The Wall Street executive constantly insults many New York Democrats with name calling and then wonders why these same Democratic leaders are not willing to just hand over their support to him.”

Indeed, this line of argument is so dumb, even by Ford's standards, that one has to wonder if he's laying the groundwork to spend more time with Morning Joe and his well-compensated corporate sinecures his family. I continue to hope he runs; surely we can all use the comedy and the inevitable happy ending these days.

Niall Ferguson is a terrible economist, too

Now that one of the great wankers of our era has turned out to be a serial adulterer as well, would it be possible for NPR to desist from quoting Niall Ferguson every time it runs a story even remotely connected to the problem of the US national debt? I understand the logic in the sentence I just wrote makes utterly no sense, but neither does anything Ferguson has to say about monetary policy or, for that matter, the sloppily-defined term that helped make him a wealthy academic playboy in the first place.

Harold Ford. I continue to hope he runs; watching him trying to win a closed Democratic primary in New York -- against an incumbent Senator with a strong upstate base! -- by running as a moderate Republican will be comedy gold.

Given that he'd be drawing dead even if he were running a competent campaign (or even showed some recognition that the race he's considering is a closed Democratic primary in New York), I'm definitely hoping he goes through with it. Watching a DLC honcho and media darling getting beaten like Royals second-stringers against the 1927 Yankees will be richly entertaining.
